Beginning to Meditate at Any Age: A Path to Inner Calm

   Meditation is a long-standing practice commonly linked with spiritual leaders and monks. It fosters emotional calmness and mental clarity. But the great thing about meditation is that anyone can practice it, no matter their age. It’s never too late to start meditating, regardless of your age: a teenager trying to manage the stress of school, a middle-aged professional looking for balance, or a senior trying to find peace. Here’s how to start this life-changing adventure at any age.

Meditation is one of the tools that helped me a lot in reaching more understanding about myself, and listening to this inner voice inside of me that guided me through many tough times. Meditation is actually essential to rediscovering our inner selves.
For the past few years, I had been using meditation to improve my life. I would sit in the quiet early hours of the morning while everyone in the house was asleep, and meditate before waking my children up and driving them to school. These few moments of stillness each day helped me to center myself and cultivate inner peace. When I stopped meditating for some months, I began to feel like something was missing and that I was off-balance.
Meditation helps us let go of difficult feelings and find that inner peace which isn’t limited by anger or fear but rather deep understanding and pure consciousness. Additionally, meditation allows our bodies and minds to rest and heal, while providing us with a sense of relaxation and tranquility.


How to Meditate?

   Begin by finding a quiet spot, shutting your eyes, and focusing on your breath. Personally, I use scented candles when I meditate, my favorites are Lavender and Vanilla. However, meditating is about more than just being still and taking deep breaths. We use this practice to build up our awareness and appreciation for ourselves and the world around us. In addition, we train the mind to stay in the present moment without getting distracted by thoughts or feelings. The breath helps us stay rooted in the moment, allowing us to become comfortable with whatever comes up.

   Meditation isn’t about avoiding our thoughts and emotions, but rather, learning how to observe them without getting sucked in. As we practice, we gain awareness of those moments when our concentration drifts off. Every time we recognize that we’ve been distracted, we work on strengthening our consciousness, bringing our attention back to the breath.
Through consistent practice, the mind becomes more at ease with stillness, allowing us to incorporate its benefits – such as peace, concentration, empathy, and presence – into our daily lives. This sense of calm has aided me in navigating difficult situations, allowing me to control my thoughts and behaviors rather than reacting impulsively or feeling overwhelmed as I used to.

   There are many methods of meditation available, so it’s crucial for you to discover which one suits you best. Some popular forms include using deep breathing techniques, calming music, or a mantra. Regardless of the approach you choose, the core practice remains the same: sitting still and focusing on your breath – inhaling, pausing briefly, then exhaling and pausing again.
Despite the cacophony of blaring car horns, yapping dogs, and chatter from nearby people, one can find peace and awareness through this essential form of meditation. Though thoughts may arise and attempt to steal your attention away from your breath, simply redirect your focus back with ease and grace. Before beginning this practice, gather all necessary materials and retreat to a serene space where you can fully immerse yourself without disturbance; leave behind any technology or potential disruptors. Settle into a comfortable position as you prepare for 10-15 minutes of deep meditation, focusing on proper breathing techniques to enhance the experience. The world around you fades into the background as you sink deeper into a state of tranquility and inner peace.
